Birds Of Prey #56 ( AUG 03)

The story starts off with the Black Canary interrogating a suspect in a defrauding scandal. The Canary interrogates the suspect (Andrew Fisher) in her own style. After near scaring him half to death he swears that he was blackmailed by someone into doing this. Canary under advisement of Oracle gives Fisher a "second chance" to make things right or she would pay Fisher another visit. After a hard nights work and picking up some food the Black Canary heads back to the clock tower. While having a conversation with Oracle, Oracle notices that Andrew Fisher was writing on his computer ( Oracle had hacked into after getting a tip that he was trying to rip off his company) was typing an apparent suicide note not just claiming his own life but the lives of his family as well. Canary blaming her self for what is about to transpire springs into action and heads over to the residence of Andrew Fisher. But when she gets there she doesn't find Fisher dead or his family dead she finds that she has been set up by a man named Savant. After having it out with Savant's thug Creote she soon finds her self in overwhelming odds. Beaten and now captured Savants springs his plan into action and contacts the Oracle and tells her that she will work for him or Black Canary will die.

This was a great set up for the rest of the of like minds story arc. I really do like Gail Simone's writing she adds allot of depth to the characters through not just dialogue between them but as well as the narratives. The artwork by Ed Benes is not too cartoony it's the nice happy medium that works real well. If you seem interested in this story check out the Like Minds TPB where the rest of the arc is completed. The arc is nice and evenly paced it doesn't slow down nor does it quickly try to finish off the story. The end was a nice wrap up a little dragging but not taking away from the story.

Story ***(out of 4)
Art ***(out of 4)
Overall *** (out of 4)

Decent read for any Birds fan or fan of Simone's work. As a comic fan i really am enjoying the Birds of Prey series wish I had jumped on it sooner then I did.
